Question
I have a Savage/Fox Model B side by side 12ga.shotgun,it show's that it was made in Chicopee Falls Mass.,but you said in a question they moved to Westfield Mass. after leaving Utica NY. My question is where can I find a serial# because I'm trying to find out what the gun is worth so I can sell it,also I was told by the my father in law it has white gold triggers but I can't find any other ones on line with white gold. I pulled the stock off but only thing under there is some letters stamped in the wood and metal are FK,then AD also the letter B and that's all hope you can help me thanks Bob.
Answer
Hello Robert Burda.
Since my answer in 2008, I have been able to find a bit more info on the moving. From 1920 to 1946, Savage Arms was located in Utica, NY. At the same time, Stevens was located in Chicopee Falls, Mass. It was in 1946 that both Savage and Stevens merged into the Chicopee Falls, Mass. plant. Then in 1959, the manufacturing plant was moved from Chicopee Falls,Mass. to Westfield,Mass.
As fare as a serial number, most of Savage produced shotguns did not have one until 1968. We can get close to your manufacture date by some details as follows:
1940 thru 1965, the Fox-B had a 'splinter forearm'. Also, in 1965, the Fox-B began using the '3 inch chamber'. In 1966, it had the 'beavertail forearm'.
There is only one other way to date your Fox-B. When you take the barrel off, on the flat part of the receiver(also called the water table) there will be a 'letter and number' inside an oval. 'A' is 1949, 'B' is 1950, etc.
As far as the triggers, they were chrome finished. Without inspecting your Fox-B, I cannot give you a true value. I can, however, give you the asking prices I have found. That would be between $450-$695.
I hope this will help answer your question. Thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
