ANSWER: Hello, again, Richie.
I am glad I could help on your previous question. However, I am going to need more information on these revolvers to identify them. I need you to write down everything that is written on them, and where the words and numbers are located. If they are both Smith & Wesson brand revolvers, the model number will be stamped on the crane ( the part you can see when you open the cylinder ). I will start a preliminary search, but can't go far on what you have given me. Just send me a follow-up. Thank's, Charles Gage

Answer
Hello Richie.
If the first revolver is a top-break, it is a .38 S&W 5th Model. If so, the front sight is made as part of the barrel. It was manufactured from 1909-1919. If it is a hand ejector (swing out cylinder), it is a .38 Hand Ejector Model of 1905, 4th Change. It was manufactured from 1915 to 1942. Since it had the longest production run of the Hand Ejector models (from Ser#241704-1000000), I would place it at 1915-1919.The other one you say is a Model 48. Could that be a 49? The Model 48 was a K-22 Masterpiece Magnum in .22 magnum rimfire. The 49 was the .38 S&W Special Bodyguard with the hammer shroud and steel frame. It was introduced in 1959. The Model 38 Airweight Bodyguard was introduced in 1955. It had an alloy-frame. The tag you have may have been from the Model 38.
Values are relative to the market at the time. The 38 S&W 5th Model Top-break can be valued from poor: $75 to exc: $385. The 38 Hand Ejector Model of 1905, 4th Change poor: $150 to exc: $475. The 38 S&W Special Bodyguard Model 49 poor: $200 to exc: $450. Smith & Wesson is very tight-mouthed about their serial numbering system. I hope this information helps.
Again, Thank you very much for asking for me. Charles Gage
