Question
I have a real old rifle that my father acquired years ago. The markings that I can find are as follows: forward of bolt on top is a crown with the word DANZIG under it. on left side under that is 2519 with what appears to be an "I" under it. On bolt is 2519 with "I" under it. On left side, next to bolt is what appears to be D G Mod 71/84. On right side, behind bolt is a number "1887". That is all I can find without dismantling it. Would appreciate any info. that you can provide.
Answer
Hello Bruce.
You have an updated version of the GEW Model 71. Are you sure your rifle is a single shot? I believe the Model 71/84 was the first repeating rifle in the German arsenal. Your rifle was manufactured at the Danzic Arsenal in Germany. Each year the model number was changed to reflect any adjustments that were made to that years production. Your rifle was definitely manufactured in 1887. These rifles were all made to use blackpowder cartridges because of the low pressure rating of the receivers. The history of it is very interesting, so I am going to refer you to this web site; www.nramuseam.com/danzig-arsenal-gewehr-98-bolt-action-rifle.aspx.
I hope this helps and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
