Remington arms co. double barrel shotgun

Question
QUESTION: I inherited from my Grandfather a Remington Arms Co. double barrel shotgun.  It has Remington Arms Co. on both sides of the plate and on the top of the barrel it has Remington Arms Co. Ilion NY USA.
The serial # is 84405.  I know nothing about guns, but would like to know the date and history of this gun.  I can't find a date anywhere. I believe it is a 12 gauge.

ANSWER: Hello Kim.
Your shotgun is a Model 1889 in 10, 12, or 16 gauge. It was manufactured from 1889-1908. Serial numbers were from 30,000-100,000. According to your serial number 84405, I would place it around 1900. There were seven grades manufactured. Grade 1 was the no-frills shotgun with  Grade 7 being the most elaborate. You can tell which grade you have by the pre-fix number 1 through 7 stamped on the water table next to the serial number. These range in price from $250-$21,000.
The history of this shotgun is not available, but would have been owned by someone who appreciated a finer shotgun.
I hope this has helped answer your question, and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage.

QUESTION: Yes it does help me, thank you so much.  I found a number 5 stamped next to the serial number, so it would be a grade 5. How much should I insure this gun for? And...how do I care for the gun, cleaning/storage?  I also have several other guns, but haven't looked at the serial numbers yet.  I may contact you again as I am sure I will have questions about these.  By the way....I graduated in 1973 as well.  Just know nothing about guns!

Answer
Hello Kim.
First, I cannot estimate a value for your shotgun. That would be relevant to the condition. It could be as low as $900, or over $7,200, depending on condition. There is also the factor of original parts. If a hammer has been changed, or the hard rubber butt plate is cracked or worn. I suggest you contact Remington at www.remington.com and ask them if they can recommend a qualified appraisal company. Be patient. You do have a valuable firearm. Thank you again for asking for me.
