NR Davis & Co twisted double barrel 12 gauge

2016/7/22 9:04:37

Question
I have an old shotgun that I'm interested in learning more about. It's a double hammer and what I believe to be a 12 gauge. It is an NR Davis and Co with the word "twisted" listed on the left side of the stock. Tere doesnt appear to be a serial number but there is a roman numeral one (I) on the inside of the stock when you crack the barrels. It's in fairly decent condition but it is missing the front stock.

Any idea on what year it was made, what it could be worth, or how I could go about finding a front stock?

Thank you for your time,

Ryan

Answer
Hello Ryan.
N.R. Davis and Company began operation in 1853 and continued as such up to 1883, when the name was changed to N.R. Davis and Sons. There were three models of double barrel hammer shotguns manufactured between 1867 and 1880. The 1st model was a side-lever opening type that was opened by pushing down on a small lever located along side the left hammer. It was manufactured from 1867 to 1875. It had twist-steel barrels in 30" or 32". The 2nd model was the same, only the opening lever was on top. It was manufactured from 1875 to 1880. The 3rd model also had the top-lever with barrels 28",30" and 32". It was manufactured from 1880 to 1883, with N.R. Davis & Sons continuing the 3rd model up to 1900. ( Information from J.T. Vorisek book Shotgun Markings Guide 1865-1940 )
All ' twist ' steel barrels were produced to fire BLACK POWDER LOADED AMMUNITION ONLY! Most of these older barrels are unsafe to fire ANY ammunition, due to separating layers inside the bore. As far as a value, the Davis shotguns were very well built, but not much interest to collectors. The value of one in good condition would be around $100. I have checked every place I know for a forearm and found one listed in Numrich Arms catalogue for almost $85.00 complete. However, they were out of stock. If it has sentimental value,I suggest that you find a place on a wall to display it.
I hope this answers your questions and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
