this gun chambered for?

Question
Hello, I was hoping you could clarify a couple of questions for me.
I have a Hopkins and Allen top break revolver, that I first thought was chambered for .32 short rim fire. But after seeing a few examples of .32's I noticed that there was more meat in the cylinder than mine, meaning the amount of steal between the outside of the bullet hole in the cylinder, to the outside of the
cylinder its self.  Were as the one I have has very little meat there leading me to believe it is a .38 short S & W round that it is chambered for. I would very much like to know for sure as to what round is the proper one for this gun. It is a police safety with a patent date of Aug. 21 1906 and the serial # S 9899

Answer
As my bio indicates, I'm not a collector nor connoisseur of old guns,so the date and SN are of no help to me in identifying your gun. However, having worked at a shop for a while, I've seen a few of these, and it is likely that your gun is chambered in .38 S&W. This would have to be confirmed by an action proving dummy round. If it is chambered in .38 S&W, however, the gun in that caliber is considered unsafe to fire.
