Iver Jonhson Champion 12 gauge

2016/7/22 9:04:27

Question
I have a signal shot 12 gauge Iver Johnson Champion. I want to know how old it is and the only numbers I can find on it is CIX. I think it could have been made anytime from 1917 to 1977 I just dont know.

Answer
Mark,

There is really no way to date this gun.  Prior to 1968, manufacturers did not have to put serial numbers on long guns (rifles and shotguns).  The Champion was manufactured for Montgomery Wards and sold by Iver Johnson directly between 1909 and 1956.  If the gun is marked "Western Field" it was manufactured for Wards, otherwise it was sold under the Iver Johnson brand.

These guns were utilitarian and inexpensive to begin with.  A specimen in 90% condition would probably only be worth $200 or so.

Wish I could help you out more, but there is just no info on these guns since they are not considered to be collectable.

Best regards,

Doug Little
