Question
Hello Charles...
My neighbor brought over a Colt 45 handgun which belonged to his Great Grandfather, a former Marshal in Texas.
This gun has a serial number which reads 186514. Serial numbers are stamped on the handle framework, as well as just in front of the trigger guard (stamped on two seperate pieces there. The gun has a horse stamped on the left hand side of the body. Immediately next to the horse it is stamped: Sept 19 1871, and immediately beneath that, it reads: July 2'72, Jan 19'75. It is stamped Colt 45 on the left side of the gun barrel. Also, stamped on the top of the gun barrel, it reads: Colts pt f.a. mfg co. Hartford Cn USA. (I think that's how it reads, as he has taken the gun back home now) Anyway, can you please assist us in identifying the gun and its manufacture date?
Certainly an estimaed value would be of help, but is not necessary, as I understand there are many variables which would affect its value. The condition, however, is amazingly pristine and appears to be in original condition without any evidence of someone trying to "clean it up." The bluing is in original condition and shows the normal wear marks from holstering over the early years of being carried.
Thanks very much for your assistance, Jon.
Answer
Hello Jon.
One source ( www.proofhouse.com ) shows your Colt Single Action Army, aka: S.A.A, as being manufactured in 1899. This revolver is one of the most collectible firearms on todays market. I advise you have it appraised. Not by your local pawn shop, or the good ol' boys at the range. There are several legitimate appraisal firms that specialize in this type of firearm. You can also get a factory letter from Colt Firearms, with information of when it was shipped from the factory, who it was shipped to, and if it was a special order. I can only go so far with information on your revolver, and this is what you read above. Please follow up on my suggestions.
I hope this helps, and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
