.410 Ranger

2016/7/22 9:04:20

Question
Hello, I have a. 410 double barrel I inherited from my grandad. Learned to shoot with it in early 70s. It was worn even then. It says Ranger in kind of a western style on the left side of receiver. It says Western Field on the rubber butt stock.  Other than the .410 caliber marking this is all the markings. Serial number is x53328. Can you tell me who made and it sold this gun?

Thanks!
jeffp

Answer
Hello, Jeff.
Ranger was a name used by Sears & Roebuck in the 1930's. Western Field was used by Montgomery Wards. Both companies contracted with Savage Arms to make their double barrel shotguns. The Ranger was Model 400 and the Western Field was Model SB311. These were both variations of the Savage/Stevens Model 311. I feel safe to say that your shotgun was actually made for, and sold by, Sears & Roebuck, in the 1930's. The rubber butt pad may have been added later, since it would be interchangeable.
I hope this helps, and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
