Question
My grandson recently found a double barrel Ranger shotgun in the basement. He asked me to clean it for him and asked how old the gun was. I didnt know the answer to that question but I told him if I remember right it was probably sold by Sears and they dealt with Stevens. The serial number is "F74667. The gun cleaned up nicely although their is some surface rust and the stock is well worn but still in good shape.Everything seems to work safety, and firing pins. Can you tell me the age of the gun , who manufactured it. I know I'm reaching but is there a way to find out where, when, and who it was sold to
Thanks. Jeff
Answer
Hello Jeff.
Yes, your Ranger was manufactured for Sears and Roebuck in the 1930's. It was catalogued as the Model 400. The Savage/Stevens Arms Co. actually manufactured it as a variation of their Model 311. The only answer to whom it was sold to, could only be found in the Savage offices archives. The answer would only show Sears and Roebuck as the 'ship to' address. After that, it would fade into oblivion. Record keeping was not mandatory until 1968.
Although these doubles were very well made, the age, itself, would warrant having it checked by a competent licensed gunsmith before attempting to fire it.
I hope this has answered your questions, and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
