Question
Sir, this pistol has "Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works" on top of the barrel rib, and "22 Supershot Sealed Eight" on the left side of the barrel. Serial number on the bottom of the trigger guard is 4836, with L4836 on the frame under the grip. The grip is wood with a diamond pattern checkering on the back. It's .22 eight shot. Any info ref. date of manufacture etc would be appreciated. Thank you.
Answer
Hello John.
The IJ '22 Supershot Sealed Eight' was manufactured from 1932-1958. Serial number L4836 puts manufacture of your revolver at 1933. The Iver Johnson catalog of 1933 had this to say about your revolver "Sealed cartridges...The chambers and the extractors are counter bored so the heads of the cartridges are flush with the face of the cylinder. Making a solid projection of surrounding steel, thus safeguarding against the possibility of the head or rim of the cartridge bursting with the resultant danger of flash of hot gas."
Another fact of this revolver is it was 'the only' Iver Johnson revolver to ever bear factory proof marks. The factory model number for plain sights was 88 and with adjustable rear sight 833. It is a 6" barrel and the rib was patented as the 'De-Flex'.
Of course, values are in relation to condition. This model is valued from $150-$275.
I hope this answers some of your questions and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
