Question
I just bought a Uberti 1866 Yellowboy rifle in 45lc, what is the difference between colt 45 and the 45 long colt ammo and what would you recommend to use for target shooting.
Answer
First, they are very well made rifles and they are really fun to shoot. A lot of people use them for hunting, too, at short range.
.45 LC is the old revolver cartridge developed for the Colt 1873 Single Action Army revolver. It is a very good handgun cartridge, and gets better when used in a rifle due to the longer barrel giving more velocity. It is a powerful round, and is still very popular, although a little expensive and harder to find in some places-you might look online for it. *
The Colt .45 ACP is an auto pistol cartridge designed by Browning for his Model 1911 pistol, so called by the Army, also a good round. It is smaller and very different design than the .45 Colt and they are NOT interchangeable at all.
ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol. It is a rimless, short cartridge made for auto pistols. The Long Colt - or just .45 Colt - is a rimmed, longer cartridge first designed for black powder and for use in revolvers, not auto pistols.
The old Long Colt, which is what your rifle needs, is a great round - still in use since 1873, which should say something to you.
Uberti makes very high quality rifles, and I am sure you will really like yours.
I would try to find cowboy action loads - solid lead bullet with a relatively light load - if you are going to use it for a range rifle.

Lever rifles were designed for fast shooting offhand - standing, sitting or prone or from horseback rather than from a bench. They are hunting rifles, and they will serve you very well as a general purpose rifle. I really enjoy shooting them.
