ear problems
Question
My son and i have started diving, during the open water course he developed ear related problems. Problems descending and assending. Takes along time to equalize when going down and get reverse block on the way back up. Have tried to get medical help from our local hospital but after trying two forms of spray treatments they have asked us to try and find any further information on the Internet! They have mentioned the term glue ear but trying to find any correct information is proving difficult. Have you any advice on how or were we could get any help or information on this issue so we can enjoy some quality time under water.
Thanks Adrian
Answer
Adrian,
Equalization problem are somewhat common. The can occur to almost anyone at anytime.
I had never heard the term "glue ear" before, but after looking around, I am familiar with the problem, but known as Otitis media.
The best advice I can give you is to enquire with the Divers Alert Network (www.dan.org). Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a non-profit medical & research organization dedicated to the safety and health of recreational scuba divers and is associated with Duke University Medical Center.
They should be able to provide you with the latest and best information regarding your son's condition and how it relates to SCUBA diving.
Hope this helps,
