Dive Mask Fit
Question
I had to buy a mask when overseas. The mask seemed to fit fine in the store, but now there is a slight leak at the side, as if the mask is now to wide for my face. The leak is very minor, and only happens when I turn my head. Are there any tricks to fix or seal this, or do I need to buy a new mask?
Answer
Hi David. I'm sorry to hear about the mask fit problems. Its not uncommon for a store fit to later not fit as well in the water. The dive shop I work for has a buy it and try policy to help alleviate these kinds of issues. I understand that is not likely in your case. There is not much you can do unfortunately. Tightening the straps tighter will likely lead to an uncomfortable fit. Continuing to dive the mask may lead to leaks later in open water. Poor equipment fit is one of the leading causes of diver stress that leads to diving accidents. I would acquire another mask from a dealer who will let you dive it in a pool a few times to to try it out and return it if it leaks. Keep the old one as a back up mask when you are on live-a-boards, etc. Or sell it off in the next swap meet. Sorry I couldn't offer a quick fix on this one. Have a great time diving, Jesse
