Recertification Dive Cylinders

Dear Sir,

I have a somewhat particular question. I have been emigrated to the US from Europe. I brought my diving cylinders (steel, 10L) from Europe with me. The problem now is that those cylinders have the correct certification data stamped into the neck for the European countries but not for the US.
Is there some way to recertificate the cylinders to DOT so I can get my cylinders filled?

Your situation is not unique.  The Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations change from time to time and I didn't have a chance to research them prior to this response.  As you already know, in order for pressure vessels (scuba cylinders) to be filled in the United States, they must have appropriate DOT/CTC markings and possess evidence of current periodic inspections.  My suggestion would be to contact a licensed DOT hydrotesting facility near you (check the phonebook) and ask them if the cylinder can be recertified and, if so, what it would cost.  If you're having trouble locating such a facility, try calling a local welding supply company (they use pressurized gas cylinders) and ask them if they can provide the name of a DOT pressure testing facility near you.  We all know that your cylinders are safe to use but it's just a matter of dealing with the beaurocratic red tape.

If it turns out that the cost or the red tape is prohibitive, you may need to sell your cylinders and start over.  If you need to sell them, I'd suggest using E-bay since you can reach the European market and the cylinders should sell easily.

I wish I could have been more help but, hopefully, this gave you some ideas.
