ruptured eardrum
Question
I ruptured my eardrum on Dec. 26 while trying to descend in Roatan. I was wondering...my ear still feels "clogged". I went to the ship's doctor while on the cruise and I went to my doctor back in the states once I got home. I have been on antibiotics and nasal decongestant w/ steroid. How long is my ear going to be clogged? Any idea? This is driving me crazy!
Answer
Hi Laura,
I'm not a physician, and you should certainly listen to what yours has to say in this matter.
You are right to use the quotes, since your ear isn't 'clogged,' but it feels like it is. I hope you are feeling better soon. It may take a while, be patient and try not to dwell on it, as hard as that is. You don't have any choice.
I've never ruptured an ear drum, but I've ruptured my round window, which is on the other side of the eardrum. It has been about 12 years, now, and I still have some tinnitus and reduced high frequency hearing in that ear! Tinnitus shouldn't be a problem after a ruptured eardrum.
Please be VERY cautious during ascent and descent. Clear before you need to, clear often, clear gently, and never, EVER force a valsalva clear. NEVER. Promise me, ok?!
saludos,
James
