bcd with a slow leak
Question
Hello. I am a novice diver. I inherited a used SeaQuest BCD recently. Of course, I want to make sure it is safe to dive. I orally inflated it, hung it up and overnight, it was about half full in the morning. I checked the dump valves, and inflator hose on the left shoulder, and they all seemed to be in place. I didn't hear any escaping air. I filled bathtub with water, with it full of air, and couldn't see bubbles, yet it is still losing air. I priced brand new BCDs and I would hate to have to buy a new one. Any suggestions?
Answer
Congratulations on buying your own gear Nick. Divers who own their gear tend to become lifelong divers. Typically a slow leak on a BC is a result of sand or dirt being lodged in the mechanism or seals of the exhaust ports. A bladder puncture is possible but less likely. BC's should be serviced each year along with regulators. If you take your BC to a reputable dive shop with service facilities they will be able to find the cause of the leak. It is a good idea when purchasing used gear to have it immediately serviced. They will replace any worn out components and have your BC ready to go for a nominal fee. Have fun diving, Jesse
