Question
actually Im gonna have to differ from your answer with Justin, I believe that it is not smart to take high strokes in the beginning. A rower needs to get the wheel spinning for the first 3 strokes and get right to pace. My strategy is go 1:37 for the first 500 then 1:37. 1:36. then balls out. I am a high school rower and pulling mid 6:20's and this has helped me out tremendously. Try it out and see what you think.
Answer
Hi Kevin: As with everything -- whether rowing or life in general, there is no one ideal strategy. And if your strategy works and brings you success in Concept II Ergometer, then don't change it. The advice I gave to Justin some time ago was based on advice I received from my College rowing coach in 1982 named Mike Teti. Mr. Teti went on to coach the U.S. Men's Eight to Olympic Gold in 2004. True, it is more applicable to the flywheel-type ergometers (which are much heavier to pull) than the CII Erg. With these type ergometers, it is nearly impossible to maintain constant splits. The high-start theory is also more consistent with traditional on-water high tempo racing starts.
I have used your approach as well and it works fine.
Thanks for your input. Good Luck on your rowing career/AP
