improving ergo time 2k

Question
im currently 16, 6ft 80 kg and pull a 1:39 split for every 500m which is a 6:36 for 2000m. i am currently in my pre season training and want to get a sub 6:20 in around in 6 months. how can i improve drastically by means of training intensity, and what type of ergos should i be doing in my training and how can i tone down to become a lean fit rower? i am looking to step up to the next level in fitness and strength. please help. thanks

Answer
Hi James: If you are pulling 6:36 at age 16, then you should be the expert and not me.

The only thing I would suggest is to improve your strength and cardiovascular base by augmenting your erg workouts with a weight lifting and running/steps/hill routine.

There are other ergometers used by colleges that are the flywheel type. They are a bit harder to pull than a CII erg.  Check with a college coach to see if you can get on one.

With respect to getting to the next level, the only recommendation I can give is to get out on the water and perfect you blade technique and making the oat go faster.  Try learning how to row a single scull, which is the best way to master powerful and controlled rowing.
