No hope?
Question
Hi. Over the last few weeks, I've developed an interest in rowing; but in the state of Mississippi, there are NO rowing clubs and I do not have any exposure to the sport. I've checked all around town, and there are no ergometers or boathouses to test my rowing potential. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer
Hi Briana: I searched around and it looks like Mississippi is a crewless state. There are other states, like Alaska and Montana, where very few people row.
Have you checked your local YMCAs for ergometers? At least the ones in my state (Virginia) have them.
If you or your parents have the money, you can do what I did. I bought my own ergometer and single scull. Ergs go for about $800 new, but you might be able to get a used one for less. I saw one going for $400 on E-Bay. A boat is a more expensive proposition ($2000 to $3000), plus you may not have access to water.
Another thing you can do is look for a rowing camp in the south and go there for XMAS/spring break or in the summer. Again, money is a factor.
Finally, if you are near college age, apply to a school with a crew program. In the meantime just maintain a good workout program of weightlifting and running and you will be in top shape when you finally get that opportunity to row.
