is 55 too short?
Question
I am a 5'5'' woman and I hope to row at a high competitive level. I am naturally very strong and have a compact, muscular body. Could this possibly make up for the fact that I am only 5'5'' or is there no hope for me to row at the highest competitive levels?
Answer
Hi Monica: While height gives rowers some mechanical advantage as it allows for a longer stroke cycle, shorter rowers with outstanding physical condition and technique can compensate for this and get placed in the bow seat of elite crews.
Of course, you can opt to row in small boats like pairs, doubles and singles, where height becomes less of a factor.
If I were you, don't worry too much about whether or not you will even be considered for a top-level program. Just row the best for the crew that you are presently on; and as you get even stronger and gain more experience, you will find yourself on faster, more competitive crews.
Bottom Line: 5'5" is NOT too short.
