Erg time - any good
Question
I am a 36 year old mom of three, about 132 lbs and 5'5". I've been a local competitive runner for a few years and recently decided to do some indoor rowing for crosstraining. A few local rowers saw me on the erg and asked if I'd be interested in joining their team. They asked about my 2k score and I hadn't tried a pull test yet - my most recent 5k was 20:40 but it was not a race-level effort as I was rowing only for cross-training. Today I did the 2k test- I don't feel I could do a proper effort since I'm suffering from a cold, but the time was 7:44. My question is - is that any good - or might they be disappointed?
Answer
Hi Susan: They will be disappointed...if you don't join the team. Your time is outstanding. To put it quantitatively, out of 134 women who posted their times in the Concept II online rankings, and who weighed less than 135 lbs and were in their 30s, your time would rank you 14th. The best time in the world for the group was 7:09.6.
Based on your erg score, you have great potential to be a successful rower. Of course, rowing on the water has its own nuances, but it is evident that you have the power and endurance to propel a boat swiftly through the water.
