High School Rowing
Question
I'm a sophomore girl, 5'3 and 126 lbs. My first 2k as a freshman was 9:00.2 and my most recent 2k is a 7:57.2. I'm very involved in my school's rowing program and have been placed on the Varsity 4.
I'm looking into the possibility of a lightweight scholarship. I hear scholarships are pretty hard to come by for lightweight women. I have a lot of time to improve, but in your opinion, what is the likelihood of receiving a scholarship. Thanks!
Answer
Hi Leah: It is pretty early, but making the V4+ is a good start. Track your on-water race results; after 20 races, if you find your boat typically finishes in the upper half, then you might have a good shot at a scholarship.
You also may want to consider rowing in a summer club program. This will give you added experience and may put you in contact with college coaches.
