500m strategy?
Question
To change things up this winter I decided to enter a 500m sprint in addition to my 2k at erg sprints. There's plenty of time between the two events so I'll have time to hydrate myself, eat a little, stretch out, etc., but I was wondering if you had any advice on strategy for the piece itself. I've pulled under 1:30 for 500 before (just to give you some numbers to work with), but I felt like I could've gone faster. I just went all out at the start and tried to hold on. I'm wondering if it might be more effective to take down the rating or maybe split it up, i.e. the first 250 at a lower rate and the last 250 at an all-out sprint. Any thoughts?
Answer
Hi Patrick: I recommend you come out of the start as high and hard as you can for the first 200 meters. I definitely think you should have a distinctive "settle" from 200 to 300 meters, anywhere from 4-6 strokes-per-minute below your start pace. Unless you are in incredible shape, you need some period to regroup. After 300 meters, it's all out.
