recruitment

Question
Hey!
I am a 16 year old junior and I am starting my spring season with one year of experience as of yet. I am wondering what are my chances of being recruited with my erg time for a 2k for now at a 8:29, I am only 5 foot 4 and weigh 137 lbs. I am definitely a short rower and am set on being recruited. I just need to know where I need to be to get recruited. I've performed very well in the Head of the Hooch, at Oak ridge and Head of the South and other lesser known regattas. Should I take the plunge and go lightweight where my height wont be such an issue? or get that erg time down? Thanks so much, Kat

Answer
Hey, Kat: Per the Concept II Database, the average 2K for women heavyweights, ages 15-17, is 8:16.1.  If you are really serious about getting recruited for a rowing scholarship, you probably need to pull a 7:51 or better.

That said, there are many other factors for scholarship recruitment other than erg times.  Coaches are going to want to know how much race experience you have.  More improtantly, they want to see if you have a record of success in major regattas and any medals earned.

For health reasons, I don't recommend you try to become a lightweight.

Good Luck/AP
