College Lightweight Rowing
Question
I am a junior, 6'1", and 145lbs. I have rowed for three years.
I stroked a Freshman and Novice 8+ my freshman year, taking 2nd and 1st place in the Midwest Championship, respectively and the freshman boat went to nationals taking 7th.
My sohpomore year i stroked the Lightweight 8+, taking 1st in the Midwest and went on to nationals and Stotesbury, taking 7th and 6th.
I am now a starboard and can row both sides very fluently and have much experience in the stern and bow of the boat. I am currently in the heavyweight 8+.
With my 2k and current experience, what more can i do to get noticed by rowing colleges/coaches out there?
Answer
Hi James: Your rowing resume is impressive. I think there is a coach out there who might offer you a scholarship. However, you can't just think that college coaches are just going to drop into your boathouse and try to recruit you, especially with you being in the Midwest. You need to write or e-mail the crew coaches of the top 2 or 4 schools that interest you. You'll want to list all the races you have been in and their results. You also want to list your best 1K, 2K and 6K erg times. You also want to discuss other athletic attributes like other sports participated and how much you can bench press, run a mile, etc.
I didn't see your erg times in your post. Some coaches emphasize that pretty heavy. Hopefully, you are in the 7-minute or better range.
Finally, you might want to consider rowing in a summer program or trying out for a regional or National camp.
Good Luck/AP
