Lightweight Womens College Rowing
Question
I am currently a female high school junior just starting the
fall season. I'm 5' 5'' and about 125lbs. I row sweep,
either side, and this will be my third year rowing. My
novice year I only did spring and therefore had not erg
scores and last winter was my first. My scores from last
winter were about 8:13 and then I only weighed 120lbs. I
know that I can drastically improve this winter and I plan
on breaking 8:00. Is it practical to hope to get a
scholarship to a good lightweight school? What would I have
to get my erg score to?
Answer
Hi Sam: You will need to break the 8:00 barrier (around 7:50) to get scholarship consideration. You will also need a resume of excellent on-water racing performance and top grades to get rowing scholarship.
It's simply tougher for women to get lightweight rowing scholarships, as compared to men, because not too many colleges offer women's lightweight rowing. Even if you don't get a scholarship, you can join any crew as a walk-on.
Good Luck/AP
