Erg Times.
Question
Mr. Al Pepper,
I am currently a Junior at Saint Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia. I am 144 pounds and about 6'0. My 2k score is between 7:10 and 7:00. I have been rowing for 3 years (planning on 4 years) and I can row both sides as well as scull. I stroked the LTWT 4+ last year. We won the Catholic League Championships, placed 2nd in The City Championships, 3rd in the Stotesbury Cup regatta and 4th in the SRAA National Championships. I am in the process of rowing in the LTWT 8+ this spring. I am nervous that college coaches won't be interested in me because of my erg scores. I want to know your thoughts on this, as well as what type of colleges are reasonable to apply to with my rowing resume in mind.
Thanks
Colin Dabagian
Answer
Hi Colin: I was born in Philadelphia and knew several rowers from "The Prep." It's a good school with a good reputation for talented rowing.
Your time is in the Top 35% for lightweights your age. Not too shabby. I think that, coupled with your tremendous experience will make you a worthy candidate for any college lightweight coach. Of course, grades and SAT scores are also important in getting into a good college.
You might want to consider an intense weight training program and diet to see if you can bulk up to 150-155 lbs. That will lower your erg time.
Good Luck/AP
