Lightweight Rowing in College
Question
I am a freshman in high school, and I am 5'4 and weight about 110 lbs. I have been rowing since June 2010, and I would love to row in college as a lightweight rower. I particularly am interesting in Bucknell's program. In the two indoor sprints that i have competed in, my times were 8:33 and 8:37. Honestly, do I have potential to be recruited by big lightweight rowing schools such as Bucknell and University of Wisconsin? Also, what would be a good 2k goal to keep in mind for the future?
Answer
Hi Ashley: Your times are above the average for female lightweights your age, around the Top-35%. By your Senior year, if you are really serious about getting a scholarship to a major women's lightweight program, you will probably need to break the 8:00 barrier for the 2K. You will also need to not only have a resume of racing experience, but demonstrated success in these races. Finally you need excellent grades and a competitive SAT score.
But I'd say you are on track for all of these.
