Improving times, stamina and being leightweight?
Question
Hi, I'm a 17 year old girl, about 5ft 4 and weight about 107 lbs.
I find that I really can't push myself as well as everyone else and I find I'm a bit better at stamina in the water than on an erg. However my club does more land training than water training and when do we water train, it's sculling which I lack confidence in.
Am I too short and light to ever row competitively?
Also do you have any tips on increasing stamina and power?
At the moment I am pulling at best a 2:09 split (for about 30 seconds) then a steady split of 2:30. I'm way behind the rest of my club that are my age and it's just getting me down as I love the sport but not sure how to excel at it.
Yours Sincerly,
Dani.
Answer
Dani,
You have to remember that while it is excellent to be strong on land, the purpose of the sport is to be strong on the water. How are you at seat racing? That determines a lot.5 foot 4 is not too short, if you row lightweight. I think gaining about 15 pounds would help you a lot on the erg, as well as lifting heavy weights and of course erging. If you love the sport, that is something that advantages you compared to others, because you are more likely to practice. If all that doesn't work I would try coxing, however it is very different from being a rower, and you may find yourself not enjoying it as much, but if you are completely discouraged, that is always an option.
