Bachendri Pal is an Indian mountaineer and the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. She achieved this feat on 23 May 1984 as part of an Indian team led by Colonel Narendra Kumar. On a second expedition in 1993, she skied down from the peak thus also becoming the first Indian woman to do so.
