Rock climbing is something different to everyone who tries it. The sport has been described as a vertical chess game, I prefer to use the term Vertical Ballet.
Those who master the sport at the highest level, and the rest of us, are physically fit and mentally awake.
The sport falls into several categories:
1. Bouldering- this is the art of practicing climbing on boulders. At one time this was considered a sub sport of climbing, but during the last decade++, many people have taking up bouldering and never go beyond that. Climbing Shoes, and chalk bag are all the climber need to enjoy.
2. Sport climbing- During the 80's, Americans climber started using bolts to protect face that were previously unprotect able. With this added security, normally place close together, climbers were able to focus on the pure gymnastic efforts of the sport versus the mechanical system behind it. These routes are normally half a rope length. This is probably today's most popular form.
3. Traditional climbing- for this the climber places a selection of removable equipment while he is climbing the cliff. His partner removes it on the way up. Traditional climbing is what most people see on TV. Routes range from 60ft to 3000 feet in length.
<b> the first three forms, the rope is only there in case you fall. The climber uses his hand and feet to make upward progress. If he weights the rope, the accent is not considered "clean" (Complete)
4- Aid Climbing- Aid climbing is the mechanical end of climbing. Here the equipment is used to make upward progress. Very gear intensive.
Big Wall Climbing- Big Wall climbing is the most complex of all. All of the techniques above are incorporated, but for this the climber plans on spending several nights on the wall to complete the accent. He brings his food, water, clothing, and sleeping gear with him.
I hope this gets you in the right direction
