starting rock climbing
Question
I have just started rock climbing and was wondering what do you think is the best way to get started? So far i've only been rock climbing 5 or 6 times. Also what is a good brand of shoe for a beginner?
Answer
You asked what the best way to get started climbing, then said you had been climbing five or six times. I have news for you, you have already started. As far as the "best" way to start, my opinion is that if you are having fun doing it, then that is the best way. If you want to start off with being shown the right/safe way to do things, I recomend taking a climbing lesson either through a guide service, local university or climbing gym. If you feel comfortable with having friends showing you the ropes, then go for it.
Either way, you should try educating your self outside of friends or lessons by reading some of the "instruction manuals" on climbing that are in print. "How to Rock Climb" by John Long is an all time favorite.
As far as brands of shoes go, you need to try on (in person) a large variety of brands and styles. I can not tell you what shoe is best, because each persons' foot is different. In general, for your first pair of shoes, buy something fairly cheap and comfortable so you can learn what you want in a shoe. After climbing for a year or so, go to a store with knowledgable sales staff and ask for what you want, then ask them to describe each shoe. Then try on as many as you can.
