Question
I just started to climb and would like the best advice that you can give to a rookie. I will be climbing indoors to start with and that is what I'm most concerned with. I've purchased a pair of Phoenix shoes (Mad Rock) and harness as a package. Any info you can give would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
Answer
This is a very broad question. My typical answer to any question like "How do I get better" is to go and climb. As they say, "Practice makes perfect".
From the gear you've listed, you will also need a locking carabiner and belay device as well as lessons on using them, if you have not had lessons already.
As far as technique, I tell new climbers to focus on their footwork. While climbing, try to be as precise with your foot placement as posible. Also, try to make as little sound as posible when placing your feet on the wall. This will do two thing: 1) it will strengthen your arms because you are taking more time to place your feet; 2) it will improve your foot work. This is very important because your legs are much stronger than your arms and most new climbers, especially men, try to do pullups up the whole wall and ware them selves out. In my opinion, getting up the wall the fastest is not the goal, simply getting to the top fluidly and with as much control as posible is the goal. This will lead to the completion of more difficult routes in the future.
Good luck and I hope this helps. If you have any other questions as you progress, let me know.
