harness safety
Question
I work at a kids camp and we have a 32 foot climbing wall. I understand your expertise is rock climbing, but my question is about harness safety. Some of the people who belay the kids on the wall allow (or encourage) them to flip upside-down so that they can repel "spiderman style". We only have seat harnesses and it doesn't seem that they are designed to hold someone upside-down. would you be able to give me some advice on this so that I am able to give them a definate yes or no answer please? Thank you in advance for your time. Chad
Answer
Chad--------you have great intuition-----the practice you describe is terribly dangerous and sets a poor example---------climbing is inherently dangerous and the only way to safeguard yourself and others is to observe safety protocols.
Please go the Rockclimbing.com accident and injuries forum to read about accidents and have your school use my book, "Ultrasafe-A Guide to safer Rock Climbing"---------I will sell it wholesale at a 50% discount, or you can get it through Amazon.com.
Keep up the smart thinking!!!---------George
