Question
Can you give me some advise on some exercises to build strength in climbing.Grip, backstregth, leg strength, and arm strength. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Answer
I think the best advice I can give you to improve your climbing is to climb. There is no better way to build the muscles for climbing especially for grip strength. Having said that, I would recommend general weight training such as lateral pull downs (pull-ups, pull the bar down in front of and behind your head to work different muscles), bicept curls, squats (the best exercise for building leg and lower back strength), etc. It is also important to work the opposing muscles like the chest, with bench press, and tricepts which oppose your primary climing muscles so as to avoid joint problems. I would recommend doing higher repition sets as opposed to high weight, low rep sets. This will tone your muscles and avoid unnecessary bulk in the form of muscle, which can weigh you down more than help you. You may also want to consider aerobic training like jogging. This will help your endurance on longer routes.
Flexibiliy is also very important especially in your legs and core. Stretch after a short warm up and after you've finished exercising.
Hope that helps,
Nick
