Answer
I'm pleased to answer your question about rock climbing. I began climbing about thirty years
ago. Back then cimbing was a sport for young men exclusively. That's changed in a big
way.
Current top climbers include both men and women in the fifteen to forty
age group. World class, high-profile female climbers have made a big
difference in the sport's demographics.
Climbers of both genders tend to be independent to a fault. They tend
to
be intelligent, though it's difficult to generalize about education
levels. Many are in college. Many don't complete college. Due to the
risks of the sport, climbers are very conscious of product quality and
often form brand or company loyalties. I swear by Black Diamond
equipment
myself. Also, though equipment and clothing prices have rocketed
upwards,
climbers' incomes haven't. Most climbers are constantly on the lookout
for a good deal. Also, there are many more climbers out there who
climb
part-time just for the enjoyment the sport offers. This is a big
change
over what was true thirty years ago. The climbing community back then
was
small and tightly knit. A sizeable number of climbers spent their
lives
climbing. It's my unscientific impression that most climbers now fit
into
the 搒port?climbing category. That is, they confine their efforts to
short, well-protected routes on easily accessible crags. This is both
far
safer and cheaper than traditional climbing on remote, high cliffs. The routes may be more physically demanding, but they do not require the depth of knowledge and experience that make wilderness routes both a mental and physical challenge.
What kind of activities are common among climbers? Fitness engenders
enjoyment of climbing. Most climbers devote at least some attention to
keeping themselves aerobically fit and trim. They pay more than
minimal
attention to nutrition. Climbers also tend to be multi-sports people.
They
engage in all manner of outdoor activities. Royal Robbins comes to
mind.
Climbers tend to be environmentalists. It is nearly impossible to
partake
of the mountains without wishing to preserve and protect them.
Climbers
do not like anyone telling them what to do. Climbers tend to be
self-confident, even when it's not warranted. Lastly, climbing is a
curiously gentle sport. Appreciation of partners, both their strengths
and weaknesses, and communication with them enable long-time
practitioners
of the sport to grow as human beings.
That's about it. Please feel free to ask follow-up questions if they
occur to you.
