Whitney Perimt
Question
Hi Robert,
Thanks for the beta on permits for Whitney. Our trip was a success and the East Buttress was amazing in quality. Just an update on their (new) walk-in permit system. They give out 4 permits at 11AM each morning. If more than 4 interested people, they draw straws; coming early no longer helps you out for there is no line. The permit, as before, is for the next day. We got even luckier because two reserved permits weren't picked up (by their deadline of 11 AM) so we got a permit for the same day.
Cheers!
Erwin

Hi Robert,
I wasn't able to secure a camping permit to do the East Buttress (around sept. 13). Do you know of any other ways to do this without one?
Thanks,
Erwin
Answer -
Dear Erwin,
That permit lottery has never worked for me, either. There's no way up without a permit, but the high volume of interest and long lead time can work in your favor. There are always cancellations, possibly even for the day you want. As open spots become available, they can be acqiured in person at the ranger station down in Lone Pine. The trick is making sure you are first in line. I once headed up a line of thirty people. To be first, I would arrive at the Portal or the Lone Pine Campground on Sunday, the 10th. I'd then get up in the middle of the night and set up shop at the ranger station front door at around 4 in the morning with coffee, book and chair. The station opens at eight and you should get your pick of any vacant permits. This worked for me, though I'll admit it is a pain. Just remember: real early on Monday will give you the best chance. Good luck.
Answer
Dear Erwin,
Thanks for the new info. It's a good thing that the rangers have figured out a better way to hand out extra permits. I'm glad you had a good trip. That's an incredible route and it's been too long since I was up there.
Yours,
Bob Walton
