Dear Jason,
As you know, every person is different. I can only speak authentically about my own interests and experiences. That said, I can easily tell you what inspires me about climbing. Climbing allows me to enter the mountain world. When I climb, I become an active part of the day, a moving part of the mountain, a small but crucial part of something far beyond ordinary human experience. I have many great memories of past climbs. I especially recall one June day ten years ago. I was a thousand feet off the ground on the Southwest Face of Half Dome. My toes were on small edges. I glanced to my left and saw Yosemite Falls shining in the distance. I looked down and saw my son grinning up at me from the belay some fifty feet below. I felt great ease, great happiness, complete oneness with the mountain and the world.
The challenge of climbing is both physical and mental. The physical challenge combines learning the moves and skills of climbing with achieving a good level of fitness. The mental challenge is to have the confidence to trust your life to your own hands and feet. When you do this successfully, you carry confidence with you into all areas of life.
Pushing one's personal limits is the most dangerous aspect of climbing. Oh, it must be done now and then, but it often tempts even the best climbers to go beyond what is possible. Extreme self-confidence can be a trap. Perhaps you heard of the tragic deaths on Mt. Hood back before Christmas. Those climbers dared too much.
