running + food
Question
John,
I see that you are the running expert. I've been running for a few years now, but pretty much just sporadically. I'm a 21 year old, looking to develop endurance for intramural college hockey. I'm wondering if it's better to run before or after my weight resistance workout, and also what's the best way to prepare for a run (as far as food and drinks go).
Thanks!

Answer
dear brian
you should defiently run before your weight workout and then get a good streching routine after your weights, the purpose of running before is to get a lot of blood deep into the muscle to avoid strain and tears in tendons ligaments.your running program should include a combination of distance and interval speed work in a very sport specific way that closely resembles your performance and duration on the ice.you can be creative and develop a series of drills and this way you can make it fun and include a training partner if conveient.
as far as food and drink.a nutrition program that consist of aprox.65 carb.25 prot.15 fat three times a day should you fine.except on your weight days you can increase your protein 10 to 12 percent after your workouts to acomondate the rebuilding proces.do not do your speed drills after your weight days.alternate weights...distanse..speed drills and repeat the process but streching after every workout.the only drink you need is water
