marathon training in high altitudes
Question
I am training just to finish the LA Marathon. My goal is to come in at 6 hours. On Thanksgiving weekend, I'm supposed to run 15 miles according to my training schedule. I will be in Denver for the holiday and will not be use to the higher altitude. I usually jog/walk my long distances with a slow 12:30 minute mile. Should I try to go the whole 15 miles, shorten the run or just take it real slow?
Answer
dear kim
congratulations on your comitment to la.My client marie portilla came in 3rd in womens div.in 2000 with a 235 40 and then she had another child and is on the come back trail getting ready for las vegas marathon jan. 30 this past march she placed 9th in la with a 248.35.went out to fast and dyed.just thought you might enjoy this td bit of info....now to your question....I would not change a thing just take it real easy and finish and do not forget the water.you can always bag it early if it get to much but as long as you take it easy you will gain a lot of experience for your MIND and of course your tired body.
hope this gives you the confidence in your quest.
the very best to you
