Hit a plateau after 10 years of running?
Question
I've been running 40-60 miles/ week for 10 years and have raced competitively (usually 10km or 21km races) most of those years. I am a slim gal, but I have gained 15 pounds in the last year. I honestly can't figure it out---I work out 2-3 hours a day (running, lifting weights, elliptical machine, swimming, biking, hiking, etc.), and I'm physically fit and strong. Shouldn't I be able to eat 1500-2000 calories? Well, I only continue to gain weight, and I'm getting discouraged! Have I hit a plateau? Maybe I'm not burning calories like I used to.
Answer
Hi Rachel
The first thing i would do is have your body fat measured with calipers to give you a base line to work with and guide you.You should look for 12 to 15 percent. You will gain a fair amount of muscle with your program, but it is simple. You burn off more than you put in.Do not count calories.I can not tell whether you hit a plateau base on info you gave me.There is allways a higher level of training if that is what you are looking for,but requires a focused program. You have to decide if that is what you want,or just enjoy the many activities that you do.Your diet could be out of balance. If you think hard back you can trace the pounds. The body fat measurement will really help you.I hope this helps Rachel. If anything else get in touch.
Best to ya
