Question
QUESTION: I am really wanting to begin a running program. I like to run but I am so bad at it and I have hip problems so I never go. I really want to be able to go on a long solid run by the end of July. I don't really know where to begin. I don't know if I should change my diet (I am also hoping running will help me lose about 15-20 pounds) when I should run, how much. I also know I need to get new running shoes but don't know which shoes would be good for me. Any help you could offer would be great.
ANSWER: Hi Erica

QUESTION: I am about 5'6" and weight about 155 20 years ols. I don't know what is wrong with my hip. I have seen a few different doctors and had numerous tests done but the results came back showing nothing. I hurts me more some days than others. I have noticed that when I really push myself too hard they hurt more for the next day or two. For about 12 years I was a soccer player and played a ton. My junior year of high school I quit and began to play racquetball. This is about the time I began to notice problems in my hip. Right now I am a member at Gold's Gym but finals are coming up so I have not been as diligent as I should be about going. Now that the weather is warming up I want to move some of my exercising outdoors. When school is over I hope to run everyday and go to the gym for classes and strength. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Erica
First your hips are probably out of alignment which is causing the discomfort.I would start a good ab program with back extensions and a good all around light streching program which should help quite a bit. Also start taking 500mg of vit c with your 3 meals a day to enhance recovery of tissues and tendons. As far as your diet, just eat good fresh vegables, fruit, quality source of protein, fish, chicken, lean beef, egg whites, good fats are flax seed oil, olive oil.Oat meal is a great breakfast. Now with the running. You want to run by time as apposed to miles, much easier.Set a time goal for the run and days you want to run like 45 min.4 to 6 times a week and then just gradually very confortable start getting out their and get it done.Be patient and consistent and most important run at a confortable pace no matter how slow. There is no hurry erica.Just enjoy it and build up gradually. You will be surprised how the body starts to adapt to your efforts. If you have any other questions just get in touch.
