Advice on running improvement

Question
I'm a 43 year old recreational runner, having run off and on for 30 years. I run the occasional 5K, lately running 5k once or twice per week. My enjoyment of running would be greatly enhanced with improvement that would take me out of the bottom 10-20% of running times. My split times for miles typically run 9:15 for the 1st, then 10:20 for the 2nd and 3rd. I'm winded and energy-drained after just the 1st mile. I have no health problems that I know of; heart rate at rest is 50. It doesn't seem to matter how much I run, the times remain fairly consistent. My brother has pretty much the same build as I and regularly runs 8:00 miles. I'm just wondering if there are any directions I might pursue such as a test that measures oxygen absorption, the possibility of exercise induced asthma, or any herbs, supplements, etc. that might improve my cardiovascular function.

Answer
I don't think you're running enough to see any major improvements.  Running 1-2x a week is barely enough to maintain fitness levels.  So, my suggestion right away is to try to run more frequently, such as 4-5 times a week, even if its for a 2 mile run.  These small additions of miles can add up for you and help you improve your running condition slightly.  I wouldn't worry about supplements/herbs to try to boost this, a simple fix on your running frequency might be just what you need.

I hope this helps you well,
