bad calf pain
Question
hi. I'm really hoping you can help me out on this. I'm 15 yrs. old, 5'6" and I play varsity soccer (mid-field) at my high school.
Two weeks ago I had a soccer game. While I was running towards the goal, a defender came sortof behind me and ended up kneeing me around the middle of my calf. well my calf cramped up immediately, i could barely lift my leg, and it was really hard when i tried to stretch it out. I didn't put any ice on it cause I didn't think it would be necessary, I just thought "cramp, no big deal". After that my calf was kinda tight, but it wasn't hurting. Two days later I had personal fitness/gym. After we stretch, we have to run one full lap, and then 4 laps of walking the curves and jogging the straights. Well, I was doing fine the first 2 laps, but then I got a pain in my calf, and as I kept running the pain just got worse and worse. After I stopped running I tried stretching it out but it didn't do anything. The rest of the day, my calf would bother me every now and then. The day after, i had soccer practice. Again I stretched and ran my 2 warm up laps. My calf started bothering me but it was barely anything. I start doing the drills, which involved running, and the pain got worse. It was like a throbbing pain (the same i felt in gym). I stopped training and sat down on the sideline with and ice pack on my calf. After that i haven't been able to play soccer, and in gym I jog extremely slow, that it's almost a walk, because everytime I run my calf starts hurting. I can't even make it through 5 minutes without pain.
can you help me get an idea of what's wrong?
thanks
Answer
Hi Maria
Its more than likely a good strain.I would recommend you use a stationary bike to maintain your fitness level for the next couple of weeks with no soccer and gym class untill it heals up.After 2 weeks you can test the waters with it.Do not stretch it,just ice and no meds.I would also add 500mg of vit c with your breakfast and dinner to enhance recovery of tendons, tissues, cell structure.Don't rush back or it could become a lot worst, like pulling it.If you have any other questions just get in touch Maria.
All the best
