do I need to train
Question
I've been running on and off since 1985. I'm a 53 yr old woman. Since mid summer I have gotten back to more serious running. I run just about every day, perhaps a day here and there for a break. On average I run and hour a day at a slow pace about 6 miles. So about 30 to 40 miles a week. I would like to do a 5K. I know it seem tiny compared to my average day run, but do I have to train for this??? I know I should be training for a marathon, but my toes seem to be the only thing stopping me. I have constant toe problems, blisters, ingrown nails and of course the runner curse of the black toe nail. I wear a good running shoe and alternate sneakers, nothing seems to work. Also because of the winter in the Northeast I have been forced to run on a boring treadmill, could that be part of the problem?
Answer
Linda,
First, clearly you already run 5k a day so there is no reason to train for it if your goal is to finish. Secondly,
WHY should you be training for a marathon? Personally, I am not a fan of treadmills and would recommend running outside even in the winter. However, if you believe you need to run indoors than a treadmill should be ok.
