Proper way to land

I'm fairly new at running, but I am in the process of training for Air Force basic training.  I've been doing some research, as I have never been much of a runner, but do exercise on a very regular basis - about 4 times a week.  I think I may be landing on my foot incorrectly when I run.  I tend to land more on my heel, instead of the ball of my foot.  I'm pretty sure that I've probably been putting undue stress on my heels this way.  My question is, how do I break this habit?  And what exactly is the correct way to land?  In changing my technique, will I actually be able to run longer, farther and more effectively?

Yes, it will better your running in every way. And yes, you can correct this.

What should happen naturally, is your foot should first strike behind your last four toes, (mostly behind the last two)on all those bones there. Not on your toes, though. The motion should then travel down the side that your pinkie toe is on, travel down and go to the heel.

This should come naturally to anyone who isn't just mentally ill. Small problems in your footstrike can occur, but they shouldn't stand out much like yours. The most likely thing would be you are focusing on it too much. If you think about it, you'll start running improperly. Go out and run a few miles. When you really get tired, you'll not have the energy to think about how you are running. And you'll be running naturally and right.
Quit thinking about it. Just run. If you run for long enough, your footstrike will fox itself. That's all you can do about it.

If you seriously try for a month or two and you can still notice that you are slamming your heel down first like that, tell me and I have a more specific way to stop that by training.
