regular running vs HIIT

Last year my fitness/weight loss program was a 45 minute slow jog around the neighbourhood every am five days a week.
I kept at it for a couple weeks and though not losing weight my belly got noticeably smaller -even got some compliments.
Then I began working split shifts with crazy hours so I changed my workout to a 30 minute HIIT routine using a treadmill and free weights.I did it the way you are supposed to -run extremely fast for a minute-lift weights-repaet. Very demanding, BUT, not losing weight.
All the experts say this new HIIT routine is THE way to lose weight, but could it be in MY case a long slow cardio is better? I find the long slow runs relax me and clear my mind while this great new HIIT does the opposite.

Your 30 minute routine you explained has some error in it, from the way I understand HIIT to be. Most HIIT workouts are basically work hard, then rest, repeat. There is no weight lifting between hard efforts, because then it just becomes a series of hard efforts after hard efforts with very low rest times.
You can find a happy medium with long/slow & HIIT workouts, if you alternate the styles. This is perfectly fine to do. You can do a long/slow run one day, and HIIT on your next cardio day.
