Kidding Myself?
Question
Rick,
I picked up running as exercise in 2006, pretty much without any prep work. I've run for tennis, softball, etc.. but obviously running for sport is very different.
Any way, I seem to always have trouble with sore ankles, shins, heels, you name it. Most of this is due to a combination of flat feet and pronation, but I think the other part is I never "warmed" up to a running routine. I just started running.
My main question is am I kidding myself at 40 that I need to be a runner now? Or am I simply not being patient enough by starting with a lot of walking first and slowly adding running? I know this is kind of a vague question, but just wanted to get your thoughts on somebody starting to run in mid-age.... Basically, right now, its just not a comfortable exercise for me to run and feel much more at home on a bike.
Answer
At your age, is probably best to do what feels better for you to do. Since you have bothersome joints & issues with running, perhaps its not the best exercise you can do for your body. If being on a bike is better for you and a lot less impact, its better to do that than to do nothing at all. Some body types can handle the rigors of running, others struggle with injuries as they push through something they maybe shouldn't do because of their body type. Basically taller & larger-framed people can run, but only do it for so long until the injuries start popping up. I for one am 6'2" and 180-185 throughout the year, so I'm not a fan of running really long distances, keep it 4 or less for me, 3 or less is even better. I can get in a good hard run in less mileage and feel better with that versus a long & slow run that seems to take forever.
I hope that helps answer your concerns.
I have created a site for shorter distance workouts if you still feel like running is enjoyable for you. Its called http://1MileNation.com and its focused on the Mile for improving fitness. My focus is on short, faster workouts that incorporate intervals with it.
