Chrondomalacia

Question
On November 1, I had 20% of my meniscus removed because I tore it.  Recovery was going great until January.  I started light running, and I had some pretty intense pain.  I went in for a second MRI, and it revealed I had chrondomalacia (which did not exist in MRI #1).  The MRI report read "Over the patellofemoral compartment, there is mild progressive chrondomalacia patella specifically affecting the patellar apex where there is increased fissuring and fibrillation best noted on sagittal image 15."  I have been swimming biking, and using light leg weights to build the surrounding muscles.  This has significantly helped and alleviated most of the pain.  I would define my knee as having occasional discomfort.  The most I have run on it is 5 minutes.  Is chrondomalacia something that will always result in discomfort or pain?  I've been stretching and biking pretty frequently for the past 4 months, and it's not yet 100%.  How long until full recovery?  Many many thanks!

Answer
Hi Matt
Recovery is a very individual thing based on past and present fitness level and the individuals ability to maintain a very consistent rehabb program.I personally went threw this years ago for eight months. The stationary bike is without question the very best tool to correct this.Over time you can get back 100% with no discomfort.Primary cause is tracking and alignment.I spent a minimum of 45 minutes a day 7 days a week and many 1&1/2 to 2hr rides. You have to get very focused and not quit.Any other questions just get in touch Matt.

All the best

John
